At first glance these artworks look like photographs of inanimate objects, when in fact these are paintings, created using acrylics, rendered full of life by the masterful and painstaking artistry of the Canadian artist Jason de Graaf.  The dedication to his craft and the attention to detail reflects through his work. His art not only translates the core essence of the picture but adds to it through his interpretation. He breathes life into the colors on his canvas.

As he puts it in his own words – “My paintings are about staging an alternate reality, an illusion of verisimilitude on the painted surface. I try to use objects as a vehicle to express myself, tell a story or least hint at something beyond what is actually painted.”  – Jason de Graaf.

And his paintings do indeed tell a story. Quietly. In whispers. The subtle message of his art creeps up on you when you least expect it and moulds to your imagination and interpretations. The sharp focus on reflections and the play of light on crystal surfaces creates a surreal effect in these hyper realistic paintings. Jason truly is a pioneer of the “Magical realism” art form.
